Alloy 7050 strictly controls its iron and silicon content, it is a new high-purity aluminum alloy that combines high strength with good fracture toughness.

Its chemical composition has two significant differences from other Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys:
  1.  It uses zirconium instead of chromium as a recrystallization and grain control additive;
  2. Its copper/magnesium ratio is larger, which is greater than 0.8.
The absence of chromium results in reduced quenching sensitivity, so slower quenching rates can be tolerated, reducing deformation and subsequent straightening operations without seriously affecting strength or corrosion resistance, of course, slow quenching also appears to cause some loss of toughness in the product. Additionally, the relatively high copper content results in additional strengthening during the second stage aging process.

7050 aluminum alloy should be considered for any aerospace application that requires the level of strength offered by 7075-T6 and 7079-T6 alloys along with high resistance to stress corrosion, exfoliation corrosion and good toughness.

Application:
For industrial applications that require high strength and good stress corrosion resistance and fracture toughness, such as bicycle suspension fork tubes, baseball bats and lacrosse, 7050 is undoubtedly a very good aluminum alloy that it can providing the high tensile strength, good corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance.
